Nick was enjoying himself, too. Scotty was being a perfect angel, and Carlee seemed to have raised that curtain and was as much fun as he had hoped. Her remark, however, had triggered something inside him that he’d thought he was over—as far as she was concerned, at least.

I could get used to all this.

She was glancing around the room, taking in the decor—potted palms, hanging baskets, seascapes on the walls, plush carpet on the floor. And it hit him then and there that the only way she could get used to such luxury was through him.

Could it be, he wondered as suspicion snaked up his spine, that her cold reserve was all an act? That she was actually playing the old game of hard-to-get? Maybe when he had given Scotty the honey bear at first meeting, she had seen he was a softie when it came to children. Especially babies. So what better way to get to him than through her son?

He shook his head to clear it, the movement so hard that Carlee noticed.

“Is anything wrong?”

“No, just tired I guess.” He tossed down the rest of his wine. A waiter appeared instantly to refill his glass, but Nick declined. “No more. One glass is my limit when I’m driving. Coffee, please. Black.”

Carlee had turned her attention to Scotty, who was playing with his creamed peas.

Surely he was wrong, Nick admonished himself. She wasn’t like the others. No way. She acted the way she did because she carried a lot of baggage from her past. Still, she might just be one shrewd cookie. He would find out soon enough. Till then, he would just continue enjoying her company, enjoying Scotty and all of them having a good time.

And he would not allow himself to think about the future—not when Carlee seemed unable to let go of her past.

“I’d love a slice of that key lime pie,” she said wistfully when the waiter brought the dessert tray around, “but I’m afraid we don’t have time.” Scotty was getting fretful, and she thought it was time they got him home and in bed.

“She’ll have a slice to go, please,” Nick told the waiter.

“No, really, you don’t need to—”

“I want to.”

“But…” She knew it was no use. He was determined to be as nice as possible, and she just had to relax and let him, even though it was so terribly awkward.

Carlee was quiet on the way home in the truck, her guilt rising once more. She should get it over with. But could not…and would not. Because she liked things the way they were for the moment.

And she liked Nick.

When they pulled up in front of her cottage, Scotty was sound asleep in the car seat Nick had fastened in the rear of the cab. He carried him inside, and Carlee led the way to her room, where she had set up the crib Nick had sent over.

“I’ll just let him sleep like he is,” she said. “I don’t want to wake him up.
